A Fast Multiresolution Approach Useful for Retinal Image Segmentation

2018

Retinal diseases such as retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), diabetic and hypertensive retinopathy present several deformities of fundus oculi which can be analyzed both during screening and monitoring such as the increase of tortuosity, lesions of tissues, exudates and hemorrhages. In particular, one of the first morphological changes of vessel structures is the increase of tortuosity. The aim of this work is the enhancement and the detection of the principal characteristics in retinal image by exploiting a non-supervised and automated methodology. With respect to the well-known image analysis through Gabor or Gaussian filters, our approach uses a filter bank that resembles the “à trous” wav…

Intravitreal aflibercept for the treatment of radiation-induced macular edema after ruthenium 106 plaque radiotherapy for choroidal melanoma.

2019

Purpose: To assess the efficacy of intravitreal aflibercept in patients suffering from post-radiation macular edema following plaque radiotherapy for choroidal melanoma. Methods: This prospective, interventional case series included patients affected by radiation maculopathy (RM) with macular edema secondary to ruthenium-106 plaque brachytherapy for choroidal melanoma. The effect of intravitreal aflibercept on best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), central foveal thickness (CFT) detected by spectral domain optical coherence tomography (sd-OCT), and Horgan’s grading scale of RM was evaluated throughout the 24-month follow-up. Intraocular pressure (IOP) and possible complications were also reco…

Dexamethasone for unresponsive diabetic macular oedema: optical coherence tomography biomarkers

2019

Purpose: To analyse the effects of intravitreal dexamethasone implant (DEX) in patients with diabetic macular oedema (DME) unresponsive to ranibizumab treatment, in relation to the inflammatory optical coherence tomography (OCT) retinal features, subfoveal neuroretinal detachment (SND) and hyperreflective retinal spots (HRS). Methods: Patients with DME poorly responsive to three injections of ranibizumab were treated with DEX. Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and central macula thickness (CMT, measured by Spectralis SD-OCT) were assessed at baseline and at 1, 3, and 6 months. Results: Overall, 44 eyes were included in the study. In the whole group, mean BCVA (baseline 51.5 ± 8.3 letters)…

Arterial Hypertension and the Hidden Disease of the Eye: Diagnostic Tools and Therapeutic Strategies.

2022

Hypertension is a major cardiovascular risk factor that is responsible for a heavy burden of morbidity and mortality worldwide. A critical aspect of cardiovascular risk estimation in hypertensive patients depends on the assessment of hypertension-mediated organ damage (HMOD), namely the generalized structural and functional changes in major organs induced by persistently elevated blood pressure values. The vasculature of the eye shares several common structural, functional, and embryological features with that of the heart, brain, and kidney. Since retinal microcirculation offers the unique advantage of being directly accessible to non-invasive and relatively simple investigation tools, the…
